Medics Against Violence was established at a time when Glasgow was recognised as the murder capital of Europe, with a homicide rate double that of our neighbouring countries.

As healthcare professionals, we were encountering violent injuries in our daily working lives and recognised we required to do more work to prevent them from occurring as opposed to just fixing them when they happen.

We could patch up the slashings and stabbings, but the revolving door would continue to bring the same patients into our operating theatres and emergency departments time and time again. We knew we could do better.
